Massive necrosis of the lymph nodes
Definition : Massive necrosis of the lymph nodes is uncommon and may be induced by obstruction of the blood flow ( nodal infarction ).
This lesion is characterized by diffuse coagulation necrosis with loss of cell nuclei but, early on, with well preserved cell outlines. Caseous necrosis is also an uncommon lesion but can be produced by infection with tuberculosis organisms and fungi in nonhuman primates. It can also be seen in the centers of rapidly growing neoplasms.
Grossly, there is semisolid, gray to pale yellow tissue.
Microscopically, there is an amorphous mass of granular eosinophilic material with no cell outlines as well as no identifiable nuclei.
