Definition: Tyrosine crystals can be found in a variety of benign and malignant conditions in the salivary glands, but they are most strongly associated with pleomorphic adenoma.

Etiology

  • Pleomorphic adenoma is encapsulated, non-invasive, and has squamous and/or mesenchymal differentiation.
  • It is the most common salivary gland neoplasm.
  • It has fibrillary stroma, which is a bright magenta color on Diff-Quik stain.
