sporadic medullary thyroid carcinoma
9 November 2010Without calcitonin screening, sporadic MTC usually presents clinically as a thyroid nodule.
In approximately two thirds of patients, lymph node metastases are present at the time of diagnosis, and curative surgery rarely can be achieved.
About 45% of the detected MTCs were microscopic medullary thyroid carcinomas (microscopic MTC).
Nodular involvement is seen in 33%.
Prognosis
Calcitonin levels return to normal in all cases without lymph node metastases, indicating potential curative (...) -
