SNAI2

MIM.602150 8q11 HGNC:11094

Slug encodes a member of the Snail family of C2H2-type zinc finger transcription factors.

The encoded protein acts as a transcriptional repressor that binds to E-box motifs and is also likely to repress E-cadherin transcription in breast carcinoma.

SNAI2 (SLUG) protein is involved in epithelial-mesenchymal transitions and has antiapoptotic activity.

Mutations in this gene may be associated with sporatic cases of neural tube defects.

The expression of E-cadherin correlates with the progression and metastasis of gastric cancer.

Pathology

SNAI2 (SLUG) mutations imay be associated with sporadic cases of neural tube defects.

- germline mutations

  • in Waardenburg syndrome type II (MIM.608890)
  • in piebaldism (MIM.172800)

- Increased Slug and decreased E-cadherin (CDH1) expression is related to poor prognosis in patients with gastric cancer. (#21274735#)

  • Evaluation of not only the expression of E-cadherin (CDH1), but also the coexpression of E-cadherin and Slug in patients with preserved E-cadherin expression would be useful for predicting malignant properties of gastric cancer. (#21274735#)
