Complement component receptor-2 (CR2 or CD21) is the membrane protein on B lymphocytes to which the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) binds during infection of these cells.

Functions

- CD21 binds to Epstein Barr virus and breakdown products of complement component C3.
- CD21 forms a signaling complex with CD19, CD81 and CD225.

Expression in normal cells

- mature B-cells
- follicular dendritic cells

  • as CD23

Expression in tumors

- follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS)

Use in pathology

- Hodgkin lymphoma demonstrates disruption of follicular dendritic cell-germinal cell clusters (evaluated by CD21 and CD23).
