H1s
The family of H1 histone genes (H1s) in man and mouse consists of 7 different subtypes, the main type histone genes H1.1 through H1.5, the testis-specific variant H1T, and the replacement subtype H1(0).
All known human H1 genes clustered on the short arm of chromosome 6, whereas the gene for the replacement variant H1(0) is solitarily located on chromosome 22.
The histone genes on the short arm of chromosome 6 are organized into 2 clusters. The major cluster at 6p22-p21.3 contains 32 histone genes, including the H1 genes H1.1, H1.2, H1.3, H1.4, and H1T, numerous core histone genes, and the HFE gene (MIM.235200) of hereditary hemochromatosis.
