focally enhanced gastritis

Definition: Focally enhanced gastritis (FEG) is typified by small collections of lymphocytes and histiocytes surrounding a small group of foveolae or gastric glands, often with infiltrates of neutrophils.

Etiology (exemples)

 IBDs

  • Crohn gastritis
  • ulcerative colitis

Synopsis

 focal infiltration of CD3+ lymphocytes, CD68R+ histiocytes, and, in 80% of cases, of granulocytes
 epithelioid granulomas
 focally enhanced gastritis in 76% of H. pylori-negative patients with Crohn disease and in 0.8% of controls

Differential diagnosis

 Helicobacter pylori-associated gastritis (33.3% of Crohn disease patients)
