Synopsis

- firm lungs, atelectatic lungs (pulmonary atelectasia)
- uneven expansion pattern
- focal alveolar hemorrhage
- focal alveolar edema (alveolar fluid in alveoli)
- hyaline membranes along terminal bronchioles, respiratory bronchioles and alveolar ducts

  • yellow hyalin membranes if uncongugated hyperbilirubinemia and icterus

Etiology

- pulmonary surfactant deficiency

  • prematurity
  • surfactant protein mutations
    • SP-A deficiency
    • SP-B deficiency
    • SP-C deficiency

Complications

- pneumothorax
- bronchopulmonary dysplasia

  • acute bronchopulmonary dysplasia
  • chronic bronchopulmonary dysplasia
