well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma
Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma (WDPM) is in contrast much rarer than diffuse malignant mesotheliomas of the pleura, with <100 cases reported in the literature, and displays a characteristic histologic pattern.
Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma (WDPM) of the pleura represents a distinct mesothelial tumor presenting with unilateral pleural effusion and superficial spreading of stout papillary formations with myxoid cores, lined by bland, flattened, or epithelioid cells, without or with limited invasion of the submesothelial layer.
Prominent formation of papillae is noted lined by relatively bland mesothelial cells, often with subnuclear vacuolation, and absence of mitoses. Invasion is absent or minimal.
Most cases have been described in the tunica vaginalis or in the peritoneum of women of reproductive age and have shown a relatively good prognosis with prolonged survival without any specific treatment and have lacked an association with asbestos exposure.
The majority of cases have been reported in the peritoneum in women of reproductive age with no history of asbestos exposure and also in the tunica vaginalis of men.
