Examples

papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Grooves & classic "orphan Annie eye" (empty round nuclei)

Deeply clefted nuclei suspect follicular lymphoma t(14;18)(q32;q21)

Tumor types

 papillary thyroid carcinoma

  • Nuclear grooving is a useful morphologic feature in the diagnosis of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid (PTC) in tissue sections and imprint smears.
  • Nuclear grooving, when seen in abundance, can be considered a reliable criterion for the diagnosis of papillary carcinoma in fine needle aspiration cytology of the thyroid.
  • The presence of occasional grooves, however, should be regarded as a nonspecific finding.

 Langerahns histiocytosis

 granulosa cell tumor

  • Granulosa cell tumor has sheets of small cells with longitudinal nuclear grooves (“coffee bean nuclei”), and Call-Exner bodies (eosinophilic fluid filled spaces surrounded by granulosa cells). Most tumors cause hyperestrogenism.
