Tumorigenesis
Among crocidolite asbestos miners in South Africa, the incidence of MM was about 4.7% (20/423 deaths). Therefore, the challenge is to identify the reasons that make some individuals more susceptible or possibly more resistant to asbestos carcinogenesis.
A first consideration is the amount and length of exposure. For example, among the 20 deaths that occurred in the crocidolite miners mentioned above,2 6 were in individuals exposed from 12 to 95 months, 6 in miners exposed from 96 to 191 months, and 8 in miners exposed for more than 192 months. The mean latency was 44.9 years from the time of exposure.
