Immunophenotype
SIg, CD20, CD10 and BCL6 expression. Nearly 100% of cells are Ki-67+.
Pathogenesis
Genetic abnormalities: t(8:14) with translocation of the MYC gene. EBV infection is frequent in endemic Burkitt lymphoma and less common in sporadic cases.
Sporadic Burkitt lymphoma is seen in children and young adults , usually in extranodal sites. Endemic Burkitt lymphoma (Africa) characteristically presents in the jaw. The tumor also arises in immunodeficient patients, primarily in AIDS.
