Clear cell hepatocellular carcinoma is not a distinct entity but a clinically inconsequential morphologic variant of one of the major tumor types.

Synopsis

- comprises about 9% of all malignant liver cell neoplasms
- marked female predominance
- associated with cirrhosis
- Clear Cell
- cytoplasmic clearing due to the accumulation of glycogen and/or fat

Differential diagnosis

- close appearance with renal or adrenal cortical carcinoma.

Differential diagnosis is facilitated by the performance of special techniques such as immunostaining for Hep-Par-1 and polyclonal CEA209 and FISH for albumin mRNA210.
