chromium

Monday 23 March 2009

Occupational exposure to chromium occurs in mining and smelting. Chromium is also used in stainless steel, pigments, and alloys. Hexavalent chromium is readily absorbed across cell membranes; it is reduced to trivalent chromium, leading to the generation of free radicals and DNA damage. Chromium is an important occupational carcinogen.
