right atrial isomerism

Definition: Isomerism of the right atrial appendages is caracterized by bilateral morphologically right atrial appendages with mirror-imaged of cardiac atria. It is associated with complex congenital cardiac lesions and ciliary abnormalities.

Associations

- complex cardiac malformations

  • anomalies of pulmonary venous return +/- pulmonary venous obstruction

- asplenia
- bronchial ciliary anomalies

  • narrow, disorganized bronchial epithelium
  • abundant goblet cells
  • short, angulated cilia with a random orientation
  • abnormal central microtubule doublet
