Clinical synopsis

- pelvic pain
- adnexal tenderness
- fever
- vaginal discharge

Etiology

- gonorrhea
- chlamydia
- enteric bacteria
- puerperal infections (from end of third stage of labor until uterus completely involutes at 3-6 weeks, usually polymicrobial)

Synopsis

- usually begins in endometrium
- associated with tubal involvement, tubo-ovarian abscess or cyst

Complications

- infertility
- peritonitis
- bacteremia
- intestinal obstruction due to adhesions
