hepatic arteriolosclerosis
24 March 2015Hepatic arteriolosclerosis is a small-vessel complication (microangiopathy) of the liver observed mainly in patients with diabetes who also have arterial hypertension. The clinical and prognostic implications of this finding, particularly regarding liver injury, remain to be further investigated.
Liver involvement in diabetes is well recognized in the form of steatohepatitis and glycogenic hepatopathy. More recently, sinusoidal fibrosis, even in the absence of steatosis, has also been (...) -
primary hepatic tumors with myxoid change
27 February 2015Mucin production in primary liver neoplasms is typically interpreted as evidence for biliary differentiation. However, it has been observed benign and malignant liver tumors that have abundant extracellular myxoid/mucinous material, yet have only evidence of hepatocellular differentiation.
Extracellular myxoid/mucinous material in isolation should not be interpreted as cholangiocarcinoma. Furthermore, the unique morphology, the clinical characteristics, and the immunophenotype results (...) -
hyaline droplets in Kupffer cell
25 February 2015Pediatric autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is relatively common and has a characteristic but relatively nonspecific histopathology with a usually prominent lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate.
Hhyaline droplets in Kupffer cells on routine H&E sections should be distinguished from the non-specific granular lysosomal structures frequently found in Kupffer cells in a variety of chronic liver diseases and from erythrophagocytosis.
Hyaline droplets may occur in AIH regardless of the type and correlate (...) -
lymphoepithelioma-like hepatocellular carcinoma
23 February 2015Lymphoepithelioma-like hepatocellular carcinoma (LEL-HCC) is an uncommon variant of HCC with only 22 cases reported in the literature in 2014.
LEL-HCC is an independent prognostic factor for overall and progression-free survivals.
LEL-HCC does not differ in frequencies of microsatellite instability, BRAF mutation, and DNA hypermethylation.
LEL-HCC is a distinct uncommon variant of HCC characterized by dense cytotoxic T-cell infiltration and favorable prognosis.
