HPV-associated neuroendocrine carcinoma
4 April 2016High-grade neuroendocrine carcinoma of the head and neck is an aggressive neoplasm which rarely arises in the oropharynx. Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the oropharynx represents a rare novel HPV-associated entity with high-grade histologic features and aggressive clinical behavior.

Although human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal carcinomas (HPV-OPCs) are generally regarded as "poorly differentiated," they actually maintain a close resemblance to the lymphoepithelium of the tonsillar crypts from which they arise: they are basaloid, exhibit minimal keratinization, and are often permeated by lymphocytes. In rare cases, the presence of cilia in a primary HPV-OPC and their persistence (...) -

HPV
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is established as causative in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs), being detected in 50% to 80% of tumors by DNA in situ hybridization (ISH) and/or polymerase chain reaction.
