Definition: Abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the ventricular system of the brain. The two common types are communicating hydrocephalus and noncommunicating hydrocephalus, distinguished according to whether there is or is not obstruction to the outflow of cerebrospinal fluid.

Hydrocephalus of childhood

Hydrocephalus of childhood may be associated with:

 intracranial haemorrhage
 infection
 aqueductal stenosis
 Arnold-Chiari malformation and spina bifida
 Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS)

Subtypes

 fetal hydrocephaly (congenital hydrocephalus)
