Definition: In biology, a tissue is a cellular organizational level intermediate between cells and a complete organ. A tissue is an ensemble of similar cells from the same origin that together carry out a specific function.
Collections of tissues joined in structural units to serve a common function compose organs. The organs are then formed by the functional grouping together of multiple tissues. Most plant and animal cells are organized into tissue which in turn is organized into organs.
The study of normal tissue is known as histology.
The study of abnormal tissue is known as histopathology.
Types
Animal tissues are grouped into four basic types:
epithelial tissue / epithelium / epithelia
connective tissue / connective tissues
muscle tissue
nervous tissue
