Definition: Infectious agents of spirochetoses. Spirochetes are Gram-negative, slender corkscrew-shaped bacteria with axial periplasmic flagella wound around a helical protoplasm. The bacteria are covered in a membrane called an outer sheath, which may mask bacterial antigens from the host immune response.
