Ovarian serous borderline tumor with focal microinvasion
Differential diagnosis
benign serous papillary cystadenoma
- may have focal areas of atypia suggestive, but not diagnostic of borderline tumor
- low grade tumors may have similar appearance, but have destructive stromal invasion
mucinous borderline tumors
- epithelium is mucinous;
- mixed tumors have mucinous, squamous or endometrioid differentiation, often associated with endometriosis
- may have papillary features, but are unilateral, associated with endometriosis;
- have nonhierarchical branching, monomorphic cells with classic features elsewhere, focal cytologic atypia (Am J Surg Pathol 2008;32:269)
