There are single case reports of renal-type clear cell carcinoma, tubulocystic clear cell adenocarcinoma of the prostate, and clear cell adenocarcinoma resembling Mullerian/urethral adenocarcinoma arising in the prostatic utricle.
Microscopy
tubulocystic and papillary glands lined by glycogen-rich, cuboidal or hobnail cells with clear to eosinophilic cytoplasm
enlarged nuclei with mild pleomorphism and prominent nucleoli
may have prominent vasculature, inflammatory infiltrate, hyaline globules, psammoma bodies
resembles ovarian neoplasm
Differential diagnosis
urothelial carcinoma : clear cell variant
renal cell carcinoma : metastatic; history of renal primary
nephrogenic adenoma
- tubules composed of single layer of cuboidal or flattened cells with clear to eosinophilic cytoplasm
- round nuclei with fine chromatin
